This may sound corny, but my number one piece of advice to helping you "survive school", especially when starting something new, is to make friends. This applies for all levels of education, perhaps you are going into your second year of high school and already have a few friends, or maybe you are starting university, and moving away from home. No matter what, starting something new is always scary, but meeting new people will help you. So introduce yourself to as many people as possible. Some won't be as friendly as others. but I promise you, it will be worth it.
I think it is particularly important to surround yourself with the best people you can, because your friend group will largely influence on the way you behave, and perform. For example, if your friends are lazy, late to classes, and don't pay attention, but instead choose to mess around at the wrong time, you might follow in there footsteps, and be less driven to do well.
However, if you make friends with those who are at the top of the class, the future superstars, and those who get their essays in on time. You may join in with their activities, take part in study groups, and find that you're doing much better in lessons, exams, etc.
By surrounding myself with the right people I have been much more motivated and disciplined with my education. Sure, this isnt the only factor which leads to good grades, but it is a big one.
